Mandala Art: An alternative for Addiction treatment -Part 1

Addiction of drugs or alcohol is not only a crisis globally found but is less talked about too. But not many people are able to resist the urge of consuming addictive stuff after they have been discharged from the facilities. Reason, they are not accepted easily back in their old lives and they are beings that have already lost hope and positivity from their life. Thus, it becomes necessary that we establish a new way to not only help individuals fighting their way back to a normal life, but also inspire them for positive thinking and betterment in life.

A couple of new treatments have emerged, today the addiction rehab centres have individual & group therapy sessions and a wide range of other therapeutic methods to treat it as well. These other therapeutic methods include, Mandala Art which is found to be very helpful and has proven effective in helping people in recovery process from addiction and substance abuse. Let’s see how it works in the different phases of treatment.

Mandala art is now becoming popular in many rehab facilities. Mandala is a non-addictive self-soothing technique that can work wonders in inculcating positive self-image and build confidence in person fighting addiction. It helps in augmenting self-image which is necessary for someone who has lost their own-self overtime due to addiction. It is a way to find yourself back and mending the severed strings with yourself over time.

A mental collapse in adulthood leaves more deeper scares than we can think off. A person is caged in depression and not to forget the withdrawal symptoms that do not leave the person alone for a very long time. The calmness that comes from mandala art can help a person that away those negative thoughts about themselves and pick up their life with new energy and positivity, Mandala art in short delivers a person a will to continue on the path of getting riddance from addiction.

It is necessary to understand that a person is not only fighting a battle of strong urge that has been gripping them for years, but also a mental battle to gather the strength to fight the distress that comes along. “Will the world take me back?”, a person continues to ask itself that echoes the answer, “Why to change, if nothing is going to fall into place”. We can change that answer into positive one by seeding hope and courage through mandala art form. It is a self-healing procedure which works magic, in finding the answers yourself. It works as meditation, an important medicine to mend yourself on inside.

Reinvent yourself – through design thinking (Podcast)

Can you really design your own life in much the same way the architect designs a house and the writer designs a book?

David Bohl at https://possibilitychange.com/design-your-life/ shares his perspective that he doesn’t know if we can design every aspect of our lives because we have certain fixed and certain variable aspects.

For example, we cannot change our upbringing: the parents, siblings, education, childhood experiences, and all that went on before you came to this awareness of your ability to design your life. All that happened in the past has shaped who you are today, so you will need to start designing your life from this point forward.

The great news is that you do not have to leave your present organisation – as I share with a real example – but can reinvent your current situation to give you more of what you want for yourself from your work AND your life!!

As an ex-IBMer, and now a leadership coach, facilitator, and expert in DESIGN THINKING explains what design thinking is, and most importantly how you can use it to RE-INVENT yourself and your career.

Kubler Ross Model and Corona Connections

People feared when country’s corona count was 100.

No alternative text description for this image
*Kubler Ross Model

But now, there is no fear when it is over 190,000 The answer lies in the psychological view of man.

There is a philosophy called the “Kubler Ross Model”. That is, when a human goes through any tragedy, natural disaster, accident, they pass through 5 stages.

They are- 1.Denial

2.Anger

3.Bargain

4.Depression

5.Acceptance

1. Denial-Refusal to believe such a thing never happened. For example,we all denied that Corona will not come to us. Even it comes, repeated denial that it will not spread to our place due to hot climatic conditions.

2. Anger- Getting angry. For example, anger over the loss of income & the loss of normal life due to lockdown.

3. Bargain- Inwardly lamenting that the Corona may not have come & there should not have been a lockdown at all.

4. Depression-It happened like this and goes in to mental pressure & depression.

5. Acceptance – the last stage.

The other way around is to accept it. Example: Get used to living with Corona.

These 5 levels are not limited to Corona alone. Applies to all the problems in human life. The worst sufferers are the ones who do not reach Acceptance level and remain stuck.

My Throwback Moments as Well Being Leader for IBM Club

I still recollect the few quarters I took up the role of IBMs Well Being Club Leader , I was extremely passionate to onboard programs like Yoga, Zumba , Mindfulness through Art and many other programs that deemed fit for IBM Employees. That what was key driver and my intention to help employees to restore their well being and rejuvenate themselves. It was like a dream come true.I was on a sabbatical and joined back in Oct 2015 and thats when I spent time setting up a few initiatives. Today I look back and feel great about the progress and accomplishment as a Founder of Srishti Vataa Healing Arts & Wellness centre . We have been able to influence over 10.000’s over the internet through our content and various collaborations and having over 3.5K subscribers across channels interested in well being .

Receiving the certificate of contribution from former IBM CHRO -Dilpreet Singh
The Badass team – IBM Club team

We had fun gaining the experience of running big ticket events – IBM Run to Zumbathon to Hackathons for skills upgradation ..under Employee engagement initiatives.

A few Lessons I learnt from this existing model :

1-There is life beyond work and work-life balance is so important

2-Especially for Developers and Software Engineers or those functions like finance, business operations do feel their jobs are so mundane and monotonous that there was nothing to improvise except when it came to processes and tools such initiatives are extremely energising and compelling reason to participate.

3-To each one -their own medicine So it was important for us to segregate activities and streams like Hobbies streams,Sports , Recreation , Arts and Theatre,Academic Excellence etc for employees to find meaningful connections and contribute as a Volunteer or participate in these events.

4-There was a sense of belongingness and employees started bonding beyond work and jobs and started taking up stretch projects on weekends- more than willingly and happily -the reward was to play a game of carrom or participate in a competition in the afternoon at the Cafeteria!

5-Such a win win for company and organisations / business units.

6-We used to look forward to Meditation Fridays or Hackathon Saturdays or Large format Events on weekends for parenting skills or art competitions.

7- Engaging families and kids were a huge bonus factor for Diversity and inclusiveness!

The ROI is huge – low absenteeism , social connections , human connections , more engagement , productivity ,personal brand image and branding for Volunteers and Club leads, high level of Self esteem and self confidence , less conflicts and enhanced collaboration , positive energy and vibes.

Still thinking or considering to explore such Initiatives for your teams? Would love to hear or know your thoughts on this?

Are you willing to accept your shadow self ?

Shadow therapy or work is an illusionary web that the mind spins psychologically to create a veil of darkness .. We all have the veils of darkness ,don’t we?

Ever wondered why the moon is associated to shadow self and the Sun to light?
(metaphorically, it symbolises the mother / psyche / subconscious mind) and Sun symbolises the father / will power / conscious mind.

Ever remember our parents telling us -“You are stupid”. “You are like that only.” “You will never change your habits”. Where did this come from? Probably from their parents? and whom did they pass it on to – us!

The moon draws energy from Sun and that’s where she gets her power from.

Similarly the darkness in our minds could be drawing power from our environment and soul conditioning / patterning, and the negative suggestions / statements and imprints that form the basis of the shadow self building up.

At times,it could manifest from self limiting beliefs or thought patterns …emotions such as fear, anger, uncertainty or being in the unknown zone or untrodden path.

The layering of the veil constantly influencing our minds , is that keeps us thinking we can never change ! We tell our selves that and we imbibe it in our belief systems and we become that ..

The works of Maa Kali (Goddess of Transformation) she symbolises change and when she enters your life – she awakens that truth or true nature within you, somewhere nudges you to connect to your true self / Authentic self ie divinity and power, confidence and drives transformation.

She prompts you to look at the shadows and accept and embrace the whole self ( Mandala )and see that truest potential – you are that ‘illumined self’ and darkness is a veil that keeps you in the comfort zone.

Too much introspection or inaction leads to depression in the mind, fear , illusion etc. That’s why I ask my clients- How do you know you are depressed ?
It is dangerous to assume that psychiatric treatment is the answer to depression.

Do you recollect those darkest moments or shadow side of you? What did you do differently?
